Madison County Chamber Dragon Boat Regatta Set for May 21st
On Saturday, May 21, 2016, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce will host its 8th Annual Dragon Boat Regatta on the Ross Barnett Reservoir at Old Trace Park in Ridgeland.
“NOTHING has ever been a better team-building activity for our company than the Dragon Boat Regatta!” – Wayne Walters, Baptist Hospital. It is favorable both for the community and businesses of Madison County and the Metro Jackson area. We are expecting 2016 to be our biggest year yet and to sell out at 60 teams.
With practices held the week of the event and the annual kick-off Paddlers Party on Thursday, May 19, weeklong festivities culminate on race day when teams of 20 paddlers and one drummer race head to head in 40-foot-long boats over a 325 meter span. No prior experience is required to compete. This event is family friendly so for those not participating there will be space to watch the races, enjoy food and a free Kids Zone.
“In 2016, we are excited to bring back the competition and camaraderie of the event. Not only is the event a great team-building experience for our businesses involved, it has become an annual calendar event for spectators and community groups. We have seen the competition get tougher with each year, so we are excited to see the outcome of the 8th Annual Dragon Boat Regatta,” said Jodi Maughon, Executive Director, Madison County Chamber.
Winners of the 2015 Regatta include: Ridgeland Fire Department, 1st Place; Fleet Feet Sports, 2nd Place; Crossfit Flowood, 3rd Place; Lightheart, Sanders & Associates, 4th Place.
Dragon Boat Racing is a 2,000-year-old tradition that originated in ancient China. It is also the world’s fastest growing water sport. This phenomenon can be seen on ABC’s the Bachelorette, NBC’s The Biggest Loser, CBS’s Amazing Race, and E!’s Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. Even royalty like Prince William and Kate participated while visiting Canada! A 40-foot-long boat, adorned with an embellished dragon head and tail, holds 20 paddlers as they move in unison to the beat of their team drummer. This unique boating experience enhances work dynamics, increases employee motivation, improves communication, raises company morale, and shreds away any barriers among team members. Teamwork is crucial to be successful in this competition. Unison is more essential than strength. A perfectly synchronized team will more than likely beat a stronger, but less coordinated team.
Races are held across the U.S. in places such as New York, Boston, Charlotte and Miami. We are now accepting team registrations! For more information on how you can get signed up today before all spots are sold out, contact Jodi@madisoncountychamber.com or call 601-605-2554!
