Nov 6, 2020 Railroad District Photo

City officials gathered at The Plaza at Old Town Crossing to celebrate the renaming of the historical
district, now known as The Railroad District of Ridgeland. The name comes from the influence
attributed to the coming of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1865, which boosted the area’s produce and
farming operations. The street running parallel to the railroad was also renamed – Old Town Crossing.
The Old Town area was home to the City of Ridgeland’s first residents along with the first post office,
church, train station, and general store.
