Heritage, Historic, and Landmark Trees: Trees are considered important community resources because
of unique or noteworthy characteristics or values. Such trees have been described as heritage, historic,
landmark, legacy, special interest significant and official. The City of Ridgeland Tree Ordinance regulates
protection and removal of trees in the City of Ridgeland, MS. The Historical Society of Ridgeland, MS is
committed to preserving the heritage and historic nature of area trees. In the City of Ridgeland, trees
remain as documentation of a historic past and continue to mark the future.
In its early years, Ridgeland’s economy was predominately agricultural, with the region becoming one of
Mississippi’s principal areas for truck gardening. The town was especially noted for its strawberry fields
as well as peach, pear, and pecan orchards. Although there are no original structures in Old Town
Ridgeland, traces of pecan orchards still exist. Notably, one such orchard can be found at Freedom
Ridge Park.
